A guide to YouTube Premiere
Looking to use the YouTube Premiere feature on your upcoming videos?
The YouTube Premiere feature has been around for a while now, but we feel that there is still a lot of confusion about the why and how brands can use Premiere. In this article, we will offer you some insights and tips on how to get the most of this functionality.
What does Premiere mean on YouTube?
Premiere is a way of publishing your content as a ‘live stream’. As YouTube puts it, the aim of Premiere is to allow ‘you and your viewers to watch and experience a new video together in real time’.
Live streaming has become a huge part of the digital marketing mix with 85% of people have watched a live stream over the past 12 months, and their preferred platform for either live or pre-recorded video being YouTube. It does not come as a surprise, therefore, that YouTube wanted to create a feature that taps into this way of distributing content.
However, as alluded to above, the video does not have to be live as YouTube Premiere allows you to pre-record your content just like you would any other video on YouTube.
Why should brands use YouTube Premiere?
Introducing a new format: Premiere adds a different video streaming format into your brand’s digital marketing strategy, allowing to increase your reach to an audience seeking this format
Creating a new viewing experience: Premiere replicates a TV-like streaming service with a set time of when the content will air, creating anticipation for your content
Generating interaction: Premiere encourages viewers to engage with your content with its live chat feature that will appear next to the video
How to premiere a video on YouTube
To upload your video as a YouTube Premiere, you need to:
Upload the video to YouTube like you would with a regular upload.
Once you arrive at ‘Visibility’, click the ‘Schedule’ button
A time and date will appear. Once you have inputted the time and date at which you wish to publish your content, tick the box ‘Set as Premiere’
Click ‘Done’ when ready
To premiere an already uploaded video:
Click on the video you wish to premiere
Click on the ‘Visibility’ button and then ‘Schedule’
A time and date will appear. Once you have inputted the time and date at which you wish to publish your content, tick the box ‘Set as Premiere’
Click ‘Save’ when ready
What is the YouTube countdown and how can I change it?
It’s important to consider the countdown feature when setting the time of your video as this will automatically play before your content.
To edit the countdown, click ‘+ Set Up Premiere’ after you have set your video to Premiere and this will enable you to choose the countdown theme (there are 15 options to choose from) and a countdown length (either 1-5 minutes).
You cannot remove the countdown, but you can replace it by a 15s-3 minute trailer if you have more than 1,000 subscribers. To do this, you will need to:
Upload the trailer to your YouTube Studio like you would with a regular upload
Either upload or select the video you want to premiere
Click on the ‘Visibility’ button and then ‘Schedule’
Once you have set a date and time and saved, click the ‘+ Set Up Premiere’ button that will appear underneath the ‘Visibility’ button
Under “Add a trailer,” click ‘Add’ and select your trailer
Can I premiere the same video multiple times?
No, you can only premiere a YouTube video once.
Who can watch it?
A Premiere can be watched across any device such as desktop, iPhone, Android, iPad and mobile browser.
What happens after it has premiered?
When your live video stream ends, your video will be uploaded to your channel like any other video. The countdown theme will not be included in your video.
This is why it is important to optimise and consider the content’s title, description and tags before streaming in order to increase its search discoverability.
